Behaviour of tourist leaves police puzzled

ARCHANA PHULL
May 17: The Kangra police are in a fix following the directions of the Home Ministry to immediately inquire into the case of alleged rape of a British lady Pamella Annpugh, by a local `Sadhu' two months ago.

The said lady has lodged a complaint with the Home Ministry against the refusal of the local police to register a rape case for some reasons. She has also represented to the Himachal Director General of Police in this regard, whereby the Kangra authorities have been asked to look into the matter.

Pamella Annpugh (55) and her Aunty Elezabeth Mery (80) reportedly stayed in the Himachal tourism hotel, Dhauladhar, in Dharamsala for some days in the beginning of February this year. Annpugh allegedly betrayed the aged British lady and escaped the hotel with all the money and documents of the latter while Elizabeth brought it to the notice of Dharamsala police officials. Annpugh managed to go back to England by that time.

According to sources, Annpugh again came back and started staying with a `Sadhu' in Nagni Mandir on the outskirts of Dharamsala. On having been identified by the police, she returned the belongings of her aunt, but for few days. She reportedly cheated the ailing Elizabeth for the second time and left Dharamsala.

And as the Dharamsala police and the British Embassy kept looking for the erring Annpugh, she herself went to the Home Ministry with an altogether different case of rape, despite being the fact that she reportedly lived with the same `Sadhu' willingly in his ``suffocating hutment'' on the Khada Danda road here.

Annpugh has mentioned in the complaint that she was introduced to the `Sadhu' by a travel agent of McLeodganj whom she had contacted for arrangements of air ticket.

However, the concerned travel agent said he did not know any details about the British lady, except for the fact that she had bought a ticket for Manchester for February 9.

What has raised suspicion about the intentions of the lady is the fact that she had got registered her age 30 years lesser than the actual one with the embassy in Delhi. ``Her allegation does not carry sense at all and is baseless. The police was in fact looking for her in Dharamsala on the complaint of Elizabeth. And then, she had been living with the ``Sadhu'' alone for many days'', says superintendent of police K.C. Sadyal. The police is still investigating into the case and is also working on the theory whether Annpugh has gone ahead with the rape version for some motivation of medical insurance, that she would be getting from the home country under such a situation.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth is reportedly staying in McLeodganj these days, the police is on the look out for her also for details.
