EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, May 17: Even as the nation is euphoric about the five nuclear tests conducted in Pokhran earlier this week, social fora Serva Seva Sangh of Vedcchi, has highlighted its various ill-effects.

Referring to opinion of several scientists, anti-Nuclear fora in home and abroad in the context, Sangh president Narayanbhai Desai termed the testing of the nuclear devises as a ``step in suicidal arms race.''

He said in a statement that several scientists had stated that the tests were bound to vitiate the atmosphere of nuclear weapons race in South Asia. The country, they pointed out, was committed to an expensive weapons race without a national debate.

``The scientists also criticised the government for its firm stand against signing the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty and the Non-proliferation Treaty but they were critical of sections of the government and the media, who said that these should be signed,'' Desai said.

``That nuclear weapons do not contribute to the security has been amply proved during the last five decades. ``The theory of deterrence has also been increasingly criticised from many military establishments and the International Court of Justice'', he added.
