  BJP trying to politicise tests, says Sonia
In yet another change of tact, the Congress has come out strongly against efforts to convert the recent nuclear tests into a partisan campaign and accused the government of making a systematic attempt to exploit it politically. Congress leader Sonia Gandhi said that the government should seek a consensus on such vital matters of national interest.
  Sonia gives go-ahead for new MP Cabinet
Congress president Sonia Gandhi is understood to have finally permitted the Cabinet reshuffle in Madhya Pradesh, a clearance which Chief Minister Digvijay Singh has been lobbying hard for. Singh has been told by Sonia to go ahead with his plans to drop several ministers and it is believed he may axe around a dozen colleagues on the grounds of "accountability".

Orissa seat widens rift between BJP, BJD
The rift between the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has assumed serious proportions over the Bhandaripokhari seat. Though the BJD was able to make the national leadership of the BJP concede the seat to it, the nomination of Rath Das as its candidate has not gone down well with the State BJP leadership.
BJP, Congress sceptical about early formation of Chhattisgarh
The ruling Congress and the opposition BJP in Madhya Pradesh are at present striving to take credit for the assurance of formation of a separate state of Chhattisgarh, though both are sceptical of its early formation. Apart from Chhattisgarh, the other two small states that are proposed to be set up by the BJP-led government are Uttarakhand and Vanachal.

PCCs dissolved in two Union territories
The Congress has dissolved its Pradesh Committees in Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, both of which saw a mass exodus before the recent Lok Sabha polls and subsequent routs in both the union territories. Congress members in both UTs had deserted the party to support an independent candidate in Daman and a BJP candidate in Silvassa, causing an embarrassing situation to the Congress Party.
Bengal Oppn claims credit for bringing in paramilitary forces
Main opposition parties in West Bengal have already begun claiming credit for "effectively forcing the Centre" to send paramilitary forces to the state during the panchayat elections. The Left Front can feel a little self-assured on the issue for having placed its order for paramilitary forces earlier. The Trinamool Congress has also been urging the Centre to conduct the panchayat elecions under the supervision of paramilitary forces.
