  Anand still ahead
Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand traded material at regular intervals but failed to gain initiative against a passive Spanish GM Pablo San Segundo for a draw to maintain sole lead after five rounds in the 7th Torneo Magistral Chess Open. The 28-year-old Anand, with 3.5 points, leads the pack of 10 players midway through the competition.
  Rafique scripts Bangladesh win
Opener Mohd Rafique's swashbuckling 77 after a fine haul of three for 55 guided Bangladesh to their first ever victory in an official one-dayer as they subdued a listless Kenya by six wickets with 2.1 overs to spare in the Coca Cola Cup triangular cricket series in Hyderabad yesterday. Earlier, batting first, Kenya were bowled out for 235 runs in the 49th over.

Paes-Bhupathi enter final
Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi came through a tough three-setter against the Spanish pair of Luis Lobo and Javier Sanchez 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (6) to enter the doubles final of the Super-9 Italian Open tennis championships at the Foro Italico. The Indians, currently ranked No. 5 in the world, will meet Ellis Ferreira (South Africa) and Rick Leach (United States) in the final.
Netherlands scare Indonesia
Holders Indonesia nearly paid the price for resting top singles player Susi Susanti yesterday when they just edged Netherlands 3-2 to reach the semi-finals of the Uber Cup Women's Team Championship. 21-year-old Ellen Engeline was the heroine for Indonesia, beating Lonneke Janssen 11-2 11-7 in the deciding match of the Group `B' tie.

Injured Costa hands Rios title
World number three Marcelo Rios won the Italian Open without lifting a racket yesterday when Albert Costa pulled out of the final with a badly sprained right wrist. Ironically, Costa had won last week's Hamburg Open in similar fashion when his compatriot Alex Corretja was struck down by fatigue in the final.
Harikrishna, Deepan bag bronze
Pentala Harikrishna and Deepan Chakravarthy of India bagged a bronze medal each as the Asian Age Group Chess Championship which concluded in Rasht, Iran yesterday. Harikrishna won the third place in the under-14 boys' section in a tie-break while Deepan was third in the under-12 boys' category. India's third entry in the age-group competition, Lairenjam Mahesh, finished sixth in the under-10 category.
