A resident of Bagichi Madhodas located near the Red Fort, Kumar had been kept under trial in jail No 2. He allegedly consumed liquor regularly and had a weak constitution. Sources add when Kumar's condition deteriorated, he was admitted to the jail hospital located within the premises of Tihar. When his condition did not improve he was taken to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, where he was declared dead.

The area sub-divisional magistrate is holding an inquiry to ascertain the cause of death. According to jail authorities, the reason for Kumar's death cannot be ascertained until they receive the post-mortem report. Area police officials claim that there were no injury marks on the body of the undertrial.
