Sane, Isha win in contrasting styles

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, May 22: Ill Health forced Rohan Gajjar to pull out of both his matches today -- one of them the under-14 final -- of the SK Pandit Memorial Adidas AITA Junior tennis tournament.

Gajjar played one set of the under-16 semi-finals against top seed Karan Doctor and lost 2-6. He conceded while trailing 0-1 in the second in the morning at Dadar Club here.

Gajjar, in his last year in the under-14, returned in the afternoon but was unable to continue beyond the second game and had to quit 0-2 down, giving the title to Pune's Vikrant Sane.

In the girls' under-14 final, feisty Isha Lakhani upset top seed and No 3 under-14 in the country Megha Vakharia 6-3, 6-4 in the battle of left-handers.

Pune's Radhika Tulpule and Sonal Phadke set up a predictable summit clash tomorrow with straight set semi-final wins. While Radhika beat qualifier Anisha Shelar 6-0, 6-2, Sonal put aside Megha 6-2, 6-1 to set up a repeat of last week's Maharashtra State Ranking tournament final where Radhika defeated Sonal.

Theboys' under-16 semi-finals also went along with the seedings as second seed Pratim Parekh drubbed the Calcutta based third seed Harshit Sharma 6-2, 6-3.

Patel nets hat-trick

A Hat-Trick, the second of the tournament, by Ronnie Patel was the highlight of Larsen & Toubro's 4-0 rout of Voltas in the first-round of the second Police Cup Hockey tournament at the Naigaum Police Headquarters ground, today.

With this triumph, L&T earned a second-round meeting with Central Bank of India.

L&T's G Trinidade pounced on a rebound and scored after an attempt by unmarked AKamte was padded off by Voltas goalkeeper Joseph Anthony in the sixth minute.

In the 21st minute, Kamte's well-measured cross was neatly intercepted by Ronnie Patel, who on the run tapped into an untenanted net. L&T custodian Ramesh Hosebettu proved a thorn in the side for Voltas forwards Valentine Lopez and veteran Romilly Lacroix. Goalkeeper Hosebettu frustrated them on a couple of occasions.

After the change of ends, Ronnie Patel made it 3-0 when he scored from the top of the box. Patel rounded-off the tally in the 48th minute with a deceptive shot that caught the Voltas defence napping.
