Bangladesh seek encore, Kenya revenge

C Ramaswamy
CHENNAI, May 22: When Bangladesh cricketers set out from their soil to take part in the Coca Cola Cup three-nation limited overs tournament, their prime aim was to beat Kenya. They accomplished the task in style with a six-wicket win at Hyderabad. Here at MA Chidambaram Stadium, they are determined to do it again. A second win against Kenya will place them in the final.

Bangladesh put up a good show in the opener against India at Mohali. Though the former posted a threadbare total of 185, they did give their fancied opponents many anxious moments. India reached the target only in the 46th over.

In the second match, they gave a jolt to Kenyans with an emphatic six-wicket win. The win has provided Bangladesh an edge over Kenyans. Bangladesh, who arrived here quite early, should feel happy, for they have had ample time to get acclimatised to the sultry weather that Chennai is experiencing now.

They had regular workouts under the watchful eyes of their Caribbean coach Gordon Greenidge. Team manager GaziAshraf Hossain said, "Our bowling is not strong enough but with the resources we have, I'm confident of doing it again." Bangladesh are likely to field the same team that beat the Kenyans at Hyderabad.

On the other hand, Kenyans, who have come for the tournament without a coach, are eager to avenge their Hyderabad defeat.

The Kenyan team manager Mehmood Quraishy, who played in the Prudential World Cup in 1975 for East Africa, said that his side was looking for a win to remain in contention. He said, "We are capable of beating Bangladesh. But in our first outing against them, it was bad that we conceded as many as 39 extras which proved to be costly."

When asked if any specific strategy have been planned for tomorrow's match, he said, "We hope to field well and not to concede extras like our first match."

Bangladesh: Akram Khan (capt), Aminul Islam, Athar Ali Khan, Sanwar Hossain, Minhazul Abedin, Khaled Mashud (wicket-keeper), Khaled Mahmud, Hasibul Hussain, Mohammed Rafique, Morshed Ali Khan,Anisur Rahman, Mehrab Hossain, Enamul Haque, Naimur Rahman. Team manager: Nogazi Ashraf Hossain.

Umpires: Suresh Shastri (Mumbai), Sudhir Asnani (Indore). Third Umpire: CR Vijayaraghavan. Match referee: Ranjan Madugalle (Sri Lanka).
