India play Lanka in opening encounter

MUMBAI, May 22: India are to take on hosts Sri Lanka in the opening match of the Independence Cup tri-series to be played at Colombo and Galle from June 19 to July 7.

India meet Sri Lanka under lights at Colombo on June 19 and then take on New Zealand at the same Premadasa Stadium in another day-night clash on June 23 after the hosts had squared off against the Kiwis on June 21, also under lights.

The schedule

1st round: June 19 -- India v Lanka; June 21: Sri Lanka v New Zealand; June 23: India v New Zealand (all day-night matches at Colombo's Premadasa Stadium).

2nd round: June 25 -- India v Sri Lanka; June 27: Sri Lanka v New Zealand; June 29: India v New Zealand (all day matches at Galle's Esplanade).

3rd round: July 1 -- Sri Lanka v India; July 3: India v New Zealand; July 5: Sri Lanka v New Zealand (all day matches at Colombo's SSC).

Final: July 7 at Colombo's Premadasa Stadium (day-night match). July 8: Reserve day.

TEAM ON JUNE 5: The Indian cricket team for the forthcomingtri-series Independence Cup in Sri Lanka is to be selected on June 5 either at Mumbai or Delhi.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jaywant Lele said a short camp lasting four or five days has been planned for the team at Chennai before its departure. The Tri-series is to be held from June 17-July 7 featuring India, Lanka and New Zealand.

Meanwhile, the Board is making all-out efforts to send the top team for both the Sahara Cup series in Toronto and the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur in September.
