According to special public prosecutor Vishwas Patil, on December 13, 1993, at around 11.15 pm after Fulchand Byas downed the shutters of his shop and went to sleep, Balraj ordered him to open the shop since he wanted some cigarettes. Byas told him that the shop was closed, which annoyed Balraj who whipped out as knife and slashed Byas in the neck.
