48 candidates in fray for State Assembly by-polls

MUMBAI, May 22: Forty-Eight candidates are in the fray for the by-polls for 10 Assembly constituencies in Maharashtra, slated for June 3. The constituencies which are going to polls are Dahanu, Ramtek, Biloli, Singnapur, Kannad, Akkalkot, Rahuri, Mulshi, Satara and Kagal.

Krishna Ghoda (Congress), Ishwar Dhosi (Shiv Sena), Barkya Mangat (CPM) and Kaluran Dhokde (SP) are in the fray from the Dahanu constituency. The by-poll for this seat was necessitated after the incumbent MLA Shankar Nam (Cong) won the Lok Sabha election from Dahanu.

In Ramtek, the Congress has fielded Anandrao Ramji Deshmukh. Ashish Jaiswal (Sena) and Raibhan Sriram Dongre (BSP) are also in the fray along with seven Independents. The seat fell vacant after incumbent MLA Ashok Gujar (an Independent supported by the Sena) resigned from the Assembly on the eve of the recent Lok Sabha elections which he lost.

The Congress has fielded Balwantrao Chavan from Biloli, which the party represented till the recent Lok Sabha polls. In atriangular contest, he is facing Gangaram Thakkarwad (JD) and Madhavrao Patil (BJP). The seat fell vacant following the election of Bhaskarrao Patil Khatgaonkar to the Lok Sabha from Nanded constituency.

Singnapur Assembly constituency witnesses the highest number of nine candidates. Those who are in the electoral race include Vyankatrao Kadam (Cong), Manikrao Jadhav (Sena) and seven Independents. The seat fell vacant after incumbent MLA Suresh Warpudkar (Congress), was elected to the Lok Sabha from Parbhani constituency.

Tejaswini Jadhav of the Congress is contesting against Subhash Patil of the Shiv Sena for the Kannad Assembly seat, which her late husband Raibhan Jadhav (Cong) represented till his death. Uttamrao Rathod (SP) and another Independent are also trying their luck in the contest. From Akkalkot constituency, Mahananda Babasaheb Tanwade (BJP), A Razak Patel (JD), Sidhram Mhetre (Cong) and Kashinath Gaikwad (SP) are also in the contest.

The BJP nominee is the widow of Babasaheb Tanwade whorepresented this constituency till his death some months ago. In Rahuri, where a by-poll is being held to fill the vacancy created by the election of Prasad Tanpure (Cong) to the Lok Sabha, the Congress has fielded Ramdas Dhumal.

The Shiv Sena has fielded Abasaheb Dhamale from Mulshi in Pune district, where a by-poll is being held following the election of incumbent Congress MLA Ashok Mohol to the Lok Sabha. Dhamale is locked in a straight contest with Vitthal alias Kumar Bajirao (Cong). The BJP has fielded Udayanraje Bhosle from Satara. Bhosle joined the BJP earlier this year. His lone rival is Shivendrasingh Bhosle (Cong).
