Sales tax on agarbatti abolished
The Chandigarh Administration has decided to abolish sales tax on ``dhoop'' and ``agarbatti'' forthwith. The same was already approved by the Administrator, but was not brought before the public, a press release of the Administration said here today. The exemption in tax on the items is already there in Punjab, Haryana and Delhi.

UCO Bank employees' protest
Members of the UCO Bank Employees Union today staged a demonstration in front of the Regional Office (Punjab) here. They were protesting against the ``discriminative and anti-employee'' policies of the management. According to R. K. Walia, deputy general secretary of the union, the employees will intensify their agitation in case their demands are not met with.

Man injured
A man was admitted to the General Hospital in sector 6 with burn injuries after a hay stack caught fire in village Khatoli near Raipur Rani today. A buffalo was also injured in the fire. According to Panchkula fire service chief, Sant Lal, the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained. It took one fire tender over two hours to bring the fire under control, he said.

Fee hike condemned
The Panjab University Campus Students Council has condemned the move to hike the examination fees by 15 per cent. In a press statement, president of the Council, Munish Anand said the move was uncalled for. The move has also met with criticism from the Panjab University Students' Union and the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad.

Haryana Punjabi Sahit Academy awards
C. R. Moudgill (Kurukshetra), Asha Kundan (Hisar) and Iqbal Singh (Fatehabad) have bagged the top three prizes for story writing in Punjabi from the state. This was decided in a meeting of the Haryana Punjabi Sahit Academy Prize Committee today, according to S. S. Arshi, director of the Academy. The writers will be honoured on May 29 by the Haryana Governor.
