CHANDIGARH, May 22: UT Home-cum-Education Secretary Anuradha Gupta today called upon the teaching community to work with dedication to improve the standard of education in the schools, especially the ones in rural areas. She was speaking after inaugurating the two class rooms constructed by the Parent Teacher Association of Government Model High School, Sector 26.
The rooms have been constructed at a cost of Rs 1.25 lakh. The association had also got three rooms constructed earlier.
Gupta urged the parents to concentrate on the overall personality development of the students within the limited facilities available with them. Citing example of Shanti Niketan, which has emerged as a big university now, she pointed out that it also lacked basic facilities like buildings, benches, teaching board and other facilities.
Eight teachers who had put in extra time teaching students after school hours were honoured and presented silver medals. She also gave school uniforms to seven needy students.
Certificates for excellence in sports were awarded to 36 students which included 33 State level scholarships and three national level scholarships.
A cash prize of Rs 500 was given to Shalu Kutlerhira for standing 3rd in Government Middle Examinations in UT this year. Harjinder Kaur, a science teacher was also honoured for her science model of optical fibre, which has been selected for the national science fair. Speaking at the function, school headmaster, Karan Singh requested the Home Secretary to get the second part of the school building completed at the earliest. DPI (Schools), D.S Mangat, District Education Officer (DEO), Joginder Moti and Ved Prakash Sharma, president Parent Teacher Association were also present on the occasion. Earlier, students presented an impressive cultural programme.
