Gurgaon residents alarmed by robberies, auto-thefts

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
GURGAON, May 22: With a spate of robberies, vehicle snatching and auto-thefts in the city, the local police, despite intensifying its efforts, finds itself dumbfound and bewildered. The incidents have not only left residents panicky but has also brought criticism for the law enforcing agencies.

A case in point is the robbery that took place on the night of May 18, when two youths entered the office of a scooter dealer, pushed him aside and fled away with a bag containing about Rs 3.50 lakhs.

``We were about to call it a day when these youngsters entered my office. At first, I thought they were customers but they forcibly pushed me and snatched the bag carrying currency,'' said Manish Malik of Krishna Automobiles. The youngers fled away in a white coloured Maruti.

On May 20, Pravin Kumar, a jeweller in the city was returning home in the evening after closing down his shop. His father, Bishambhar Dayal Sharma was holding a bagful of cash, sitting pillion on the scooter. Three youngesters on a mobike followed them and as they reached their residence in Sector-4, the youth tried to snatch the bag from Sharma. Luckily, Pravin's brother, Surinder too came out and they had a brawl with the robbers the robbers also inflicted burn injuries to Pravin from a country made pistol.

Though the youngsters could not take away cash, the incident has left the Sharmas apprehensive about the law and order situation. In another incident last night, three youngsters snatched a car and Rs 2,000 from the driver of the vehicle at Sector-10. The boys, who came on a mobike stopped the vehicle, forced the driver out and decamped with the vehicle.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Gurgaon, Khushi Ram Dahiya said that they have intensified patrolling in the area and set up `special' nakas at all the exit points.

The SSP was of the view that a group of three boys were involved in all the cases. ``The police is on look out for the culprits,'' the SSP said.Residents feel that if such a situation continues for some more days it will create an atmosphere of insecurity among them. The police, on the other hand says that despite their best efforts, success continues to elude them.
