Charges of torture denied

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, May 22: The West district police have denied the allegation that 12 children were tortured at the Paschim Vihar police station on May 15. They were reportedly detained on the charge of stealing of a car stereo at the venue of a weddding function.

The children were picked up after guests at the wedding allegedly beat up 12-year-old Raju and handed him over to the police. The Paschim Vihar police now claim that they are trying to identify the persons who bashed up the child.

DCP Rajesh Malik said an ASI detained the children as two of them reportedly had a past record of petty thefts. Malik said the children were permitted to go home on the same night as the evidence against them was not satisfactory. A medico-legal case has been registered in connection with Raju. An enquiry has been initiated to find out why the children were detained without informing their parents.
