Lal reaches semis

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, May 22: Jagdish Meena and Pradeep Lal, India's only wheelchair tennis players, returned after a one - week tour to the $ 1, 000 Thai Open Championships at Pataya city. The tournament was played on hardcourts and the players were put up at the picturesque Royal Cliff Beach Resort, Pataya.Though Pradeep Lal made it a memorable semi-final appearance his first in an international event -- he eventually lost 4-8 to Osahi of Japan.

Jagdish Meena, employed with the Railways, was not as lucky, losing out in the first round to Naomi, also of Japan. In the consolation round, he lost to Thailand's Aum Pai 4-8.

In the doubles event, the Indian pair went down to a far superior Thailand team of Susa Korn and Manop 2-8.

While Lal's legs were paralysed due to a botched spinal cord operation in 1974, Meena's physical handicap is due to diabetic gangrene after which his left leg was amputated below the knee in 1990.
