Sunil and Amanjot bag titles

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, May 22: Third seed Sunil Kumar and top seed Amanjot Singh of Chandigarh gave a sterling performance to win the under-16 and under-14 boys titles respectively in the Adidas Junior Tennis Circuit which concluded at Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA) courts here today. Sunil, a PUNWIRE trainee, beat P Vishal of Delhi 6-2, 6-3 while Amanjot defeated NV Murli (Delhi) 6-3, 7-6, checking the boys trophy from going to Delhi. Both the girls titles, under-14 and under-16, had gone to Delhi yesterday.

Sunil Kumar, who had recently graduated from under-14 category to under-16 group, played true to his reputation. He took 2-1 lead in the first set in no time to stamp his authority. However, P Vishal's forehand returns often landed at the net cord, which gave Sunil a 5-2 lead. Another backhand volley gave Sunil the set.

Sunil, however, maintained the tempo of the game in the second set too and was 5-2 up. His serves and volley gave a harrowing time to the Delhi lad. Second seed P Vishal, tried to make amends with his deceptive cross court shots. But Sunil's superb physical fitness enabled to counter his opponents move with ease.

In the under-14 finals, it was a battle of wits and Amanjot Singh proved his steely nerves. Although the top seed won the first set comfortably (6-3) in the second set fourth seed NV Murli was in a no mood to give up. After trailing in the initial stages 2-3, he went 5-4 up.

Thereafter, the players were engaged in long rallies with NV Murli, being at the receiving end most of the time.

Two volley shots helped Amanjot to level the score 6-6. In the tie-breaker Murli hit a volley at the net (6-7), which gave Amanjot the title.
