  Quick draw brings Anand crown
Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand of India annexed the Torneo Magistral crown with a fluent 23-move draw against world number nine Peter Svidler of Russia to bag his third Super Category title of this season. World number two Anand played with determination against Svidler, a better rated player than other GMs in the seventh edition of the Madrid tournament and remained undefeated, scoring 6.5 points from nine games.
  India play Lanka in opening encounter
India are to take on hosts Sri Lanka in the opening match of the Independence Cup tri-series to be played at Colombo and Galle from June 19 to July 7. India will meet Sri Lanka under lights at Colombo on June 19 and then take on New Zealand at the same Premadasa Stadium in another day-night clash on June 23 after the hosts had squared off against the Kiwis on June 21, also under lights.

Malaysians rally to beat Danes, Indonesia score
A courageous fightback from Roslin Hashim helped Malaysia sneak into the Thomas Cup final showdown with Indonesia after they scored an upset win over Denmark in the semifinal. In the second semifinal, Indonesia's men shrugged off a defeat for former World Champion Heryanto Arbi in the opening rubber to beat China.
Roberto Baggio, Bergomi in Italian squad
Bowing to a nationwide clamor, coach Cesare Maldini has included veteran star-forward Roberto Baggio on Italy's World Cup team for France '98. In a surprising decision, Maldini also called 34-year-old Inter Milan defender Giuseppe Bergomi while dropping from the list of 21 players Chelsea's star Gianfranco Zola and Lazio's striker Pierluigi Casiraghi.

Sampras faces tricky start
