  Brown paints victory
Opener Ali Brown, with a quicksilver 59 off only 40 balls, led the charge as England raced to an emphatic win here at Headingley yesterday, overhauling South Africa's 205 for eight by seven wickets with 15 overs to spare. Earlier, batting first, South Africa could manage only 205 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their 50 overs.
  South Korea, umpire corner India
India's humiliation in the ninth men's World Cup hockey tournament here continued yesterday as they went down 3-4 to Korea in a pool A match which ended in much controversy following the unending bad decisions by Umpire Irfan Zaidi of Pakistan. Coinciding with the full-time hooter, Zaidi awarded a disputable 13th penalty corner to Korea and Keon Wook Kang made an indirect conversion, giving Korea the match.

Indonesia retain Cup
Indonesia clinched their 11th Thomas Cup title yesterday when doubles pair Candra Wijaya and Budiarto Sigit gave them an unbeatable 3-1 lead over Malaysia in the final being played in Hong Kong. Wijaya and Sigit defeated counterparts Lee Wan Wah and Choong Tan Fook 15-11 15-12 to give Indonesia victory with only the final singles rubber of the five match final remaining.
Third straight win for Germany and Australia
Germany and Australia moved closer to semi-final berths from pool A as both posted their third straight victory at the women's World Cup hockey tournament in Utrecht on Sunday. Australia swept past the United States 6-1 while Germany defeated China 3-1 on two late penalty corner goals by Denise Klecker (65th and 68th).

Merchant survives Lily scare
Two of the top Indian snooker players, Yasin Merchant and Devendra Joshi made it to the quarter-finals of the Alpic Om-Agarwal Snooker tournament and in similar fashion. Merchant, who had smooth sailing throughout the tournament was pushed up the wall by D Lily but finally managed to keep his unbeaten record intact in the snooker round robin matches.
Germany beaten
Georgious Karagkounis' finished Pantelis Konstantinidis' spectacular solo run and Greece surprised Germany 1-0 on the opening day of the European Under-21 Championship on Saturday at Bucharest. Netherlands edged Romania 2-1 in the day's other match.
