SRINAGAR May 25: Prominent separatist leader Shabir Shah, who had fallen out with the All Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC), today launched a new political party giving a new turn to the separatist movement in Kashmir.Named as Jammu and Kashmir Democratic Freedom Party, the new political organisation named its office-bearers from all communities and regions of the State to beat the Kashmiri Muslim leanings of other separatist fronts and organisations.
Shah's party stands for resolution of Kashmir through dialogue and with the consent of the people of the pre-1947 Jammu and Kashmir. Asked whether the new party will support armed militancy, Shah adopted his characteristic ambivalence. ``It is the gun which brought the Kashmir issue in focus,'' he said.
Enunciating the objectives of the new party, Shah said besides its political agenda, the new party would work for ``generating awareness on social, human rights and environmental issues and foster values of religious tolerance among the Kashmirisociety''.
The party has steered clear of contentious issues regarding the Kashmir situation, he said adding his party will soon launch units in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir. Coming down heavily on the Indian Government for its atrocities on Kashmiris, Shah said he would agitate against the suppression.
