Row over Tohra's Nirankari visit gets tangled

Yogindra Mohan
PATIALA, May 25: The ongoing controversy regarding the purported visit of the SGPC president, Gurcharan Singh Tohra to the Nirankari Bhawan here is becoming more curious by the day.

Tohra, who not only denies the visit and sees a conspiracy against him, has sought the constitution of a committee by the Akal Takht jathedar to go into the genuineness of the photograph submitted by the Congress leader Capt Amarinder Singh. On the other hand, Ram Lal Kad, a senior Nirankari leader, confirmed to the ENS today that the SGPC Chief had indeed visited a congregation of Nirankaris on February 15 held at Nirankari Bhawan.

Kad is one of the persons seen in the picture released by Amarinder Singh. There were two other prominent persons in the picture - Joginder Singh Thind and Pushpinder Bansal. While Bansal (who is alleged to have escorted Tohra to the meeting) made himself unavailable, Thind (Pramukh, Nirankari Mandal, Patiala) refused to be drawn into a controversy. But he said he did not remember Tohra havingvisited the Nirankari Bhawan in the last few years and that the picture appeared made-up.

However, Kad said that he was not sure about the picture released by Capt. Amarinder Singh as the distance between him and Tohra at the function was more than what the photograph shows. ``Some superimposition technique may have been used,'' he added.

Meanwhile, Tohra, who was speaking to media persons at Laout village on Patiala-Bhadson road, alleged that certain elements were making a bid to derail his ``panthic movement''. He appealed to the Akal Takht jathedar to set up a committee of technical experts to evaluate the genuineness of the picture.

Incidentally, the Akal Takht had rejected Capt. Amarinder Singh's plea to appoint a five-member panel of retired Supreme Court judges to probe the entire issue. Tohra said that the picture released by Capt. Amarinder Singh was fake and manipulated ``on the computer.'' He said he had been shown wearing woollens in the picture while majority of others were wearing summerattire.
