Landlord beaten up, 13 including councillor, held

Ashish Wagh
May 25: The Bhayander police today arrested 13 persons, including a councillor of the Mira-Bhayander Municipal Council for alleged ransacking of a landlord's house on Sunday.

The police were also on the lookout for 60 more members of a mob who destroyed the house and plantations of Liyaqat Shaikh. The watchman and servants present at the house were also beaten up.

The attack was reportedly provoked by a feud between two brothers, Sebastian and Mathias Andrade, over a plot of land which Sebastian had sold some years ago to Shaikh, allegedly against Mathias' wishes. Even after the sale, Mathias had not allowed Shaikh to take possession of the land. As per government records, the land belongs to Sebastian.

On May 14, Sebastian had called government surveyors to measure the plot, but Mathias tried to stall their work. A police constable on duty, U K Patil, was injured in the right eye after being hit by a member Andrade family. On Sunday, at about 9 pm, a group of over 80 men, led by councillor Helen Gavitand John Negerl, stormed Shaikh's house, and according to police inspector P B Niphade, instigated the mob to attack Liyaqat. The police were yet to ascertain the causes of provocation for the attack.

Those arrested were: Helen Gavit, John Nigrel, Zuran Dinil, Roby Denis, Diaman Miranda, Bastiav Nigrel, William Dinil, Anthony Tanya, James Nigrel, Kresha Nigrel, George Gosal, Raniger Denis and Rajesh Soz.
