Gangrape witnesses allege harassment

Pradeep Kaushal
JAIPUR, May 25: The police has beefed up security at Kaila Devi village in Karauli district of Rajasthan on Sunday after some people complained of attempts to terrorise the witnesses in the gangrape case of a 20-year-old married woman by Sapotra's BJP legislator Rangji Meena, two Congress leaders, village sarpanch Kamal Meena, panchayat samiti member Lehri Meena and Megh Ram Meena on the night of May 20.

In a telephonic talk with The Indian Express today, District Police Superintendent Hanuman Singh Vishnoi informed police patrolling has been beefed-up in the town after he received complaints from some people who alleged that the gangrape case witnesses were being terrorised to make them back out their stand.

Regarding the arrest of Rangji Meena and the other accused, Vishnoi said the court had directed the police to register an FIR following a criminal complaint by the woman. The Kaila Devi police had, consequently, registered a case under Section 376 of the IPC. Thereafter, the investigation hadbeen transferred to the crime branch of the CID.

According to reports, Pawan Gupta, an eyewitness had complained to the police that he had been threatened by Kamal Meena. Gupta also said the same to a state Congress fact-finding committee on Sunday. The Congress committee, comprising of former minister Neelima Sharma , former IAS officer and a ICC member Mahendra Singh and state youth Congress vice-president Abhinesh Maharshi, met the victim as well as the eye-witnesses. It alleged that that an attempt was being made to hush up the case by transferring it to the CID.
