Democrats win 15 of 20 seats in HK elections

AGENCIES
BEIJING, May 25: The democratic forces on Monday claimed 15 of the 20 directly elected seats, but pro-China candidates dominated other segments to ensure Beijing's control over Hong Kong in the first election under Chinese rule. The Democratic Party emerged as the single largest party in the popular vote segment securing nine seats while its allies clinched six of the 20 directly-elected seats in the 60-member Legislative Council which went to polls on Sunday.

As expected, the other 40 seats were dominated by pro-China candidates who were elected in a complicated three-tier electoral system. The pro-democracy nominees could manage no more than five seats. Analysts said this will ensure Beijing's control over the region's affairs despite getting a meagre share of the popular vote.
