Swadeshi Abhyan sets another truck on fire

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
AHMEDABAD, May 25: In another attack on multinationals under its `Swadeshi Abhiyan', activists of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) set a Pepsi truck ablaze in the Kalupur area of the city on Monday, causing damage of over Rs 1 lakh. No arrests have been made so far.Five days ago, VHP activists had burnt and looted trucks of Pepsi and Coca Cola in two different areas of the city.According to information, the incident was reported at around 2 p.m. when a group of VHP supporters intercepted a Pepsi truck near N.C. Bodiwala College on Kalupur Tunkshal Road. The activists shouted slogans against the US's decision to levy sanctions on Indian s a result of the nuclear tests at Pokharan.Police said more than 50 youths gathered at the spot; some of them quarrelled with the truck driver, while some damaged the truck and then set it on fire. A fire brigade tanker was rushed to the spot after the information was received but the truck had been destroyed by then.Police said the driver of the truck (number GJ-1-X-4246) Kishore Krishnappa Angal (27), who is also the salesman of the company for the area, stated in his complaint that he was on way to a delivery in the area when the activists stopped his vehicle and surrounded it. They then poured some inflammable oil on the truck and set it on fire.

Police said that both Pepsi and Coca Cola companies have more than 40 delivery trucks each in the city but no agents. The police, on the request of the companies, had provided protection to some of the premises and vehicles; it was difficult, however, to provide protection to all the vehicles. This truck too had no guards.

The police have intensified patrolling in the areas and are searching for the arsonists.
