Cong demands alternate site for slum-dwellers

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, May 25: Congress councillors on Monday urged the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) to stall plans to remove 500 slums in the eastern part of the city before the monsoon.

Led by former deputy mayor Shailesh Mehta, Kanchanbhai Parmar, Nandu Pardesi and former councillor I D Patel, the delegation asked Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Administration) H S Patel to put off plans to displace those staying in Jayramnagar, Jivannagar and Valmikinagar Hanuman tekri. The slum-dwellers have been staying there for more than 25 years.

The slum-dwellers should be shifted to alternative sites provided by the State Government, the delegation stated.

Mehta alleged that for the past one week, the Vadodara Municipal Corporation men were threatening to demolish the huts unless the slum-dwellers moved out from the areas near Town Planning Scheme number 3.

He stated that the slum-dwellers were not given alternative sites even though they had filled up the forms issued by the Vadodara Municipal Corporation and the Collectorate two years ago.

SCHOOLS: THE School Board has proposed to merge nearly five schools run by it. The proposal will be taken up for discussion in the Board meeting to be held on Saturday.

According to sources, the proposal has been mooted as the number of students in the schools is very less. Each class has only about 25 students, whereas as per government standards the strength should be around 40.
