NEW DELHI, May 25: Delhi Chief Minister Sahib Singh Verma has said that the power crisis in the Capital would end in 48 hours. Speaking soon after a meeting with Union Home Minister L.K. Advani and Power Minister P. Kumaramangalam this evening, he said that the Centre has promised to bridge the gap between the demand and supply of power in the next two days.Sahib Singh said that against a demand of around 2,4OO MW, today's supply fell short by 300 MW.
The Chief Minister said that he had brought up the issue of pending power projects for the Capital in the meeting. These would add more than 2,300 MW to the supply, he added. (The Bawana Phase-II can add 1,000 MW, gas-based Pragati and Narela thermal projects 300 MW each and 10 small projects, with capacities ranging from 50 MW to 100 MW, generating another 750 MW.)He said that the main problem with these projects was the fuel component.
The Union petroleum ministry had recently expressed its inability to provide gas for these projects but had instead promised to supply naphtha, he said. ``These projects are expected to be completed within the next two years and that will mitigate the power problem in the capital,'' the Chief Minister said.
Earlier in the day, Union Power Minister P. Kumaramangalam said that the Centre was supplying enough power to Delhi and ``it is up to the Delhi Government to distribute power to every house''.
Talking to reporters after inaugurating a workshop on Austrian hydel power construction methodology today, he put down the dismal power situation to ``a pile of historical mistakes, including use of obsolete transformers and cables''.
Saying that a decision on revamping the Delhi Vidyut Board has to be taken by the state government and that his ministry can only give advice. He felt that if some drastic measures are taken and DVB employees go on strike the situation could worsen, he said.
