AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalitha has opposed the introduction of the draft bill on the power ordinance in the Budget session of Parliament, expressing the view that it was bound to affect the interest of farmers. The general perception is that the ordinance would go against the interest of farmers not only in Tamil Nadu but the entire country especially Punjab where electricity and water were provided free Jayalalitha said.
RPI votes to stay with Cong in by-poll
The Republican Party of India (RPI) yesterday voted against breaking its alliance with the Congress, and accepted passive electioneering during the June 3 by-elections to 10 assembly constituencies in Maharashtra.

Cong off the mark; bickering slows SS-BJP
The crisis-ridden Shiv Sena-BJP alliance has been especially slow off the blocks, with the Congress having already toured all 10 Assembly constituencies where by-elections will be held on June 3. While the Congress's star campaigners -- Sharad Pawar, Chhagan Bhujbal, and Madhukar Pichad -- were shouting down the ruling alliance and criticising its performance, the Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party were bickering over who should campaign and where in the state.
Curtains for Shabana play in Pakistan
The latest victim of tit-for-tat cancellation of cultural events in India and Pakistan is Tumhari Amrita, a play starring Shabana Azmi and Farooque Shaikh. Five shows of the play were to have been staged in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad -- beginning May 21. But with barely 24 hours left for the first show, organiser Tasneem Jaffer called off the play citing threats held out by "certain organisations" that the auditoriums staging the play would be attacked.

Cong wont bash Govt on N-tests in House
The informal CWC meeting took over an hour and around 10 members were present for a discussion on what to do in the long Parliament session where potentially, any development could take place. The party discussed at length what stand to take on the first two days when the recent nuclear tests are to be debated. And how to deal with the later presentations of the Railway and General Budgets.
"Women are worse than cows here"
The more the women of Rajasthan try to prevent history from repeating itself, the more frequently it returns as a darker spot on the BJP-ruled State's much-blemished track record. Take, for instance, the stark parallels between the two gangrape cases that jolted the conscience of the nation. In the Bhanwari Devi case, the sathin was denied her right to a medical examination for 52 hours; in the double gangrape case involving the 27-year-old daughter of a well-known Hindi journalist, the victim was made to wait for nine hours (from 2.30 pm to 11.30 pm, on September 5, 1997).
