  Pakistan hijack drama ends
Pakistani security personnel impersonating as Indian officials overpowered three Baluchis, who hijacked a domestic PIA flight to oppose a possible nuclear test by Islamabad in Baluchistan, after a brief shoot-out at the country's Hyderabad airport ending a nine-hour long drama.
  PM calls for free scientific set-up
Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee wants scientific institutions in the country to be freed from stifling bureaucratic controls, accompanied by a radical change in the mind-set of science administrators. In a surprisingly sharp attack on the current scientific set-up in the country, the Prime Minister said it was not lack of funds which was coming in the way of progress as much as the "bureaucratisation of the institutions".

Gangrape witnesses allege harassment
The police has beefed up security at Kaila Devi village in Karauli district of Rajasthan on Sunday after some people complained of attempts to terrorise the witnesses in the gangrape case of a 20-year-old married woman by Sapotra's BJP legislator Rangji Meena, two Congress leaders, village sarpanch Kamal Meena, panchayat samiti member Lehri Meena and Megh Ram Meena on the night of May 20.
Containers of nuclear material stolen in Russia
As global concerns grow over the increase in smuggling of highly dangerous nuclear material in former Soviet Union, smugglers have once again disappeared with six stolen containers of radioactive material in the Russian city of Volgograd.

Sena stand a "streak of absurdity", says Benegal
Noted film director Shyam Benegal yesterday criticised the recent stand of the ruling Shiv Sena against performances by Pakistani artistes in Mumbai, calling it "a streak of absurdity". He also said that the governments of the day had always taken advantage of the film industry as and when required.
