Venkataraman speaks of an aborted N-test

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, May 26: Former president R Venkataraman has claimed that all preparations for an underground nuclear test at Pokharan had been completed in 1983 when he was defence minister. But it was shelved because of "international pressure".

In a letter congratulating Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for the May 11 and 13 nuclear tests, Venkataraman said, "In 1983 I went down the shaft to see things for myself."

"It was shelved because of international pressure. The same thing happened in 1995," Venkatraman said in the letter, according to official sources.
