BJP meeting silent on govt's working

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
AHMEDABAD, May 26: That the government will dominate the party organisation became evident at the very first meeting of the state unit office bearers. The meeting was so tame that the performance of the government was not appraised, nor was any demand raised to accommodate loyal party members in boards and corporations. Even the bifurcation of districts carried out by the BJP government was quietly accepted.

Briefing reporters here on Monday, new state general secretary Vijay Rupani gave details about the party's popular programmes in the fortnight between June 29 and July 14. According to him, Keshubhai Patel and Rana would tour the districts during this time, with a fixed programme for each day in each district. The programmes would include meetings with prominent citizens, party workers, officials and bureaucrats, media and the police besides public rallies every day.

He said a state executive body, possibly including public figures, would be appointed by next month. By June 30, he added, all the districts would have an organisational set-up, including districts where no elections were held. In such districts, appointments would be made on an ad hoc basis.

Incidentally, Rupani disagreed with a suggestion that by doing so, the BJP was stepping into the Congress's shoes.

Rupani said the ad hoc committees would also be appointed in newly carved-out districts. When asked whether the government accepted the bifurcations, he hastily corrected himself, saying it would be done only in those districts approved by the chief minister. He said the state office-bearers had also decided to hold a meeting of tribal leaders in Gandhinagar on June 15 to hear their grievances.

The meeting also passed a resolution expressing total faith in the leadership of Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee. It also committed Gujarat's total support to the Centre in any crisis arising out of the sanctions that might be slapped on the country in the wake of the nuclear tests.

When asked why the meeting did not take up the working of government, Rupani said it was so satisfactory that there was no need to discuss it. He said no formal discussion on the appointment of chairmen of boards and corporations had been taken up at the meeting.
