SURAT, May 26: A former mayor has claimed that the alternative site identified by the Municipal Commissioner S Jagadeesan near the weir-cum-causeway for setting up 350 million litres/day water works was not ``feasible''.The former mayor, who claimed that he had been instructed by Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel not to go to press, today told reporters that the guidelines of the company -- which constructed the weir-cum-causeway -- stated that there should be no construction within one-km radius of the dam.
Proving his point, he said that a senior SMC engineer, who was not taken into confidence by the commissioner, also backed him up.
According to him, only Jahangirpura was the ideal location for the project. The Tata Consulting engineers, hired by SMC to prepare a master plan, had earlier recommended the construction of water works at Jahangirpura.
However, the SMC entered into a dispute with Asharam Bapu, an influential religious leader, who also laid a claim on the Jahangirpura land.
While, leader of house in SMC Fakirbhai Chauhan wants that the proposed water works be set up at Jahangirpura, the commissioner said that the alternate should be explored before taking any final decision.
Earlier, Jagadeesan had announced that SMC could construct the water works at Jahangirpura, if Asharam Bapu could give up his claim on 18,00 sq mt land. However, within 24 hours, the commissioner said that he did not require Jahangirpura land as he had found an ideal location. He had also claimed that technical experts of SMC had recommended that the alternate site should be considered before taking any final decision.
Meanwhile, it is reliably learnt that the Chief Minister has decided to convene a meeting at Gandhinagar shortly to clear the controversy about Asharam Bapu's illegal possession of the land. The BJP leaders too want amicable solution to the dispute as Bapu is said to have his followers in the party.
Municipal commissioner S Jagadeesan, mayor Navneet Jariwala, former mayor Fakirbhai Chauhan, collector and Asharam Bapu have been asked to attend the meeting.
