  World Bank stalls $ 1 billion loan
In the first fall-out of the nuclear test-induced sanctions in a multilateral organisation, the World Bank has deferred a discussion on energy sector loans to India, amounting to nearly $1 billion, after several countries sought to have the item removed from the agenda for a scheduled board meeting. The Bank sent out a notification on Monday night announcing that the items relating to loans for India were being removed from the agenda after the executive directors of several countries called for it.
  Nuke-chill freezes India-US communication channel
The memorial day weekend heralds the official onset of summer in the United States, but winter has descended on Indo-US ties following the nuclear tests last fortnight. The Line of communication between the two sides has been frozen and a perceptible chill has enveloped the sole channel which reopened last week -- between Indian ambassador Naresh Chandra and Under Secretary of State Thomas Pickering.

China warns Japan on US defence pact
China yesterday demanded an explanation from the Japanese Government on the scope of its revised defence pact with the United States and warned that Beijing will not brook any wanton interference on the Taiwan issue. Expressing "grave concern" and "strong indignation" at the statement, Zhu said the Chinese Government's stand on Taiwan is "firm" and "unshakable" and Beijing will not tolerate outside interference in its internal affairs.
British want Emperor to apologise for war
While Queen Elizabeth II prepared a lavish welcome, the anger of British veterans and civilians brutally treated by Japanese soldiers in World War II threatened to overshadow a state visit by Japan's emperor Akihito.

Sphinx restored after ten years
Egypt has officially unveiled the Sphinx after a ten-year restoration programme costing more than two million dollars. An immense white sheet, sprangled with golden stars, slid from the shoulders of the 4,500-year-old monument on Monday to reveal it in all its new splendour.
Habibie, Army ask kin to quit official posts
The government of Indonesia's new president B J Habibie yesterday freed two prominent political prisoners in a gesture of national reconciliation. Justice Minister Muladi said the release of other political prisoners was under consideration, saying the most likely candidates were those jailed for protesting human rights violations.
