Agassi, Bruguera crash at first hurdle
Andre Agassi and former champion Sergi Bruguera crashed out of the French Open yesterday, both losing first-round matches against opponents ranked outside the top 100. Bruguera, the 1993 and 1994 winner and a losing finalist last year, slumped to an embarrassing 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 defeat by Argentine Hernan Gumy, the world number 106. Agassi lost 5-7, 7-5, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 to Russian teenage sensation Marat Safin.

India win at long last
India finally got their act together, if only just, and snatched an 1-0 win against New Zealand for their first points in Pool A of the men's World Cup hockey tournament on Tuesday. After struggling to get going for much of the game, Mukesh Kumar, found the net from the penalty spot after receiving a fine, through pass from Sabu Varkey, about six minutes from the close.

Dutch women slam five goals past India
The Netherlands and Argentina qualified for the semi-finals from pool B with all-win records after four matches in the women's World Cup hockey tournament, in Utrecht on Monday. The Dutch overwhelmed India 5-0. In other pool A matches, Scotland beat China 2-1 while South Africa defeated USA 2-1.

AITA draws a Spanish plan
Following Spain's example, the All-Indian Tennis Association (AITA) have drawn up elaborate plans to boost the sport in the country. At its Executive Committee meeting in Mumbai yesterday, AITA decided to host at least 20 tournaments for both men and women in a year, besides holding one more tournament each in the Satellite, Challenger and ATP category.

Lankan schoolboy set to make Test debut
Sri Lankan schoolboy spinner Malinga Bandara is set to make his debut in the first cricket Test against New Zealand at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo today. Bandara, 18, is Sri Lanka's newest spin discovery. The leg spinner played at the Youth World Cup held in South Africa early this year and took 16 wickets.

Sethi downs spirited Agrawal
Tournament favourites, India's Geet Sethi and England's Roxton Chapman entered the billiards semi-final of the Alpic-Om Agrawal Billiards And Snooker Tournament at the Garware Club House in Mumbai yesterday. In the last quarter-final encounter, Sethi overcame a spirited effort by veteran Subhash Agrawal and managed a 1054-964 win.
