  Pakistan survive Polish scare
Defending champions, Pakistan enjoyed large slices of luck and came through 3-1 against Poland, who missed a second-half penalty stroke, in a crucial pool B match of the men's World Cup hockey tournament. But the victory anything but guaranteed Pakistani a ticket to semi-finals as they still need to beat Australia on Thursday which certainly is a tall order.
  India brace for Canadian challenge
With the Netherlands ending the suspense over the second qualifier for the semi-finals from Pool A yesterday night, following their 4-2 win against Korea, the focus is on the battle for the 3-6 positions with India very much in with a chance to match their Sydney World Cup hockey placing of fifth overall.

India women go down fighting
Gritty India went down fighting 2-4 against Asian Champions South Korea to finish without a point in their Pool `B' of the 9th women's World Cup hockey tournament yesterday. The Korean scorers were Woo Hyun Jung (2) Lee Eun Young and Choi Kwan Sook. For India, Pritam Thakran scored both the goals. The Asian champions, who led 2-0 at half-time, finished third in the pool with nine points from five outings, having won three matches.
Versatile Venus powers into third round
Powered by huge serves and delicate drop shots, Venus Williams rolled into the third round of the French Open tennis championships, routing Ai Sugiyama of Japan 6-0, 6-2. It only took one more game for Williams' potential quarter-final opponent, top-seeded Martina Hingis, to advance. Hingis easily beat German Meike Babel, 6-1, 6-2.

Kenya, virtually assured of a final showdown against India at the Eden Gardens thanks to their net run rate advantage over Bangladesh, will hope to add to their improving form as they take on the hosts in the final league tie of the Coca Cola Cup triangular cricket series at the Captain Roop Singh Stadium.
Fleming, Parore prop Kiwis
New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming and Adam Parore hit half centuries to guide their side to 282 for seven on the opening day of their first Test against Sri Lanka. Fleming made 78 and Parore remained unbeaten on 67 as New Zealand recovered from losing regular wickets on a slow wicket at the Premadasa Stadium.
