Summer fury claims some more lives
The unrelenting heat wave sweeping most parts of the country claimed 38 more lives, pushing the death toll to 287 this summer, as no respite from the blazing sun appeared in sight. Thirty-four people died in Orissa since yesterday, taking the toll to 59 as the entire western belt of Orissa turned into an inferno, recording 49.8 degrees celsius.

No attack on Pak stations, says Malik
India's Army Chief General V P Malik yesterday accused Pakistan of launching a "disinformation campaign" about a pre-dawn attack on its nuclear facilities and said the country had neither mobilised its forces nor had any plans for carrying out such an attack.

Britain, Germany blast tests
The British government condemned Pakistan's nuclear tests and called on both Pakistan and India to unconditionally accept the NPT and CTBT. Britain's Foreign Secretary Robin Cook speaking from Luxembourg said, "both Indian and Pakistan should back-off from the arms race they have become engaged in." He said that they could do more for regional security by signing up to the test ban and non-proliferation treaties.

Haryana Govt yet to check "doubtful" liquor
The Haryana government is yet to start tests for checking adulteration in liquor in the post prohibition era, even as complaints regarding liquor of `doubtful' quality continues to pour in. Couple of days from now, it will be two months since prohibition was lifted in Haryana by the Bansi Lal Government. The State Government netted crores of rupees by auctioning bar licenses to hotels and resorts. But in it's enthusiasm, it probably forgot to monitor the quality of liquor and alcoholic beverages sold in the state.
