  Unforgiving Clinton slaps sanctions
Deploring Pakistan's multiple nuclear tests, President Clinton yesterday announced that the US would impose sanctions against Islamabad under the Glenn Amendment, the same law under which India was censured for its tests. He also said that by failing to exercise restraint, Pakistan has lost a truly priceless opportunity to strengthen its own security and improve its political standing in the eyes of the world.
  Pak cries wolf at Geneva to fool CD meeting
Pakistan yesterday called on the member states of the Conference on Disarmament (CD) to stop what is claimed was an imminent attack on Pakistan's nuclear sites. The Pakistani charge came hours before Foreign Minister Gohar Ayub Khan anounced Pakistan had conducted two underground nuclear blasts.

Britain, Germany blast tests
The British government condemned Pakistan's nuclear tests and called on both Pakistan and India to unconditionally accept the NPT and CTBT. Britain's Foreign Secretary Robin Cook speaking from Luxembourg said, "both Indian and Pakistan should back-off from the arms race they have become engaged in." He said that they could do more for regional security by signing up to the test ban and non-proliferation treaties.
Elections in '99, says Indonesian speaker
Fresh elections promised by the new Indonesian Government of President BJ Habibie will be held next year, Parliamentary Speaker Harmoko said yesterday. Harmoko did not give a precise date in 1999 but said that a period to "acquaint the public" of the MPR decision and prepare for the elections was needed.

Now China will clone the giant panda
Faced with a fast-dwindling population of wild giant pandas and limited success with breeding in captivity, Chinese experts are researching cloning as an option for saving the treasured national symbol from extinction. Beijing's Chinese Academy of Sciences recently granted 12,000 dollars in initial funding for a research project on panda cloning at its Institute of Zoology.
Court asks Clinton aides to testify
A federal judge formally ordered two presidential aides to tell a grand jury about their discussions with President Bill Clinton and his wife concerning Monica Lewinsky, calling it "some of the most relevant and important evidence" in the investigation, according to released court documents.
