Kenya plunder India in bid to make final
The Kenyan lions lived up to their reputation of being a fighting force with three batsmen scoring half-centuries to amass 265 for five, their highest against India, and virtually assured themselves a passage to the final at the Eden Gardens in Calcutta.
Indians go totally dry against Canada
India's performance slid from bad to worse as they went down 1-4 to Canada in their final Pool A league fixture of the men's World Cup hockey tournament. The result meant that the Indians, with just one victory to show for their efforts, finished at the bottom of the pool, having three points, which left them to fight it out for the 9-12 positions, the same as in the 1986 World Cup.

Jim Courier vows to keep "coming back"
Jim Courier, twice a French Open champion, isn't thinking of throwing in the towel just yet despite yesterday's second-round loss to German qualifier Jens Knippschild. Although stung by his straight-sets loss, the 28-year-old redhead American vowed to keep on coming back to the scene of two of his greatest triumphs -- as long as he believed he had a real chance of tasting glory again.
New Zealand put brakes on Sri Lanka
New Zealand fought back fiercely to put Sri Lanka on the defensive at 251 for seven at close on the second day of the first Test at the Premadasa Stadium yesterday. The tourists resumed from an overnight 282 for seven and lost their last three wickets for 23 runs with off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan ending with five wickets for 90 runs.

Chapman, Sethi set for an encore
The billiards final of the Alpic-Om Agarwal Championship this year will be a repeat of last year's finale as favourites Geet Sethi of India and England's Roxton Chapman battle for supremacy once again. Sethi had won the encounter last year and would be looking for an encore. Another fluent win in the semis saw Yasin Merchant set up a title clash with Ashok Shandilya.
Balakrishnan betters national mark
Rajeev Balakrishnan responded to the announcement of the Asian Athletics qualifying times by clocking 10.44 secs while winning the Cardinal International meet at Stanford, California. The qualifying time for the 100 metres announced by the AAFI is 10.43 seconds and Balakrishnan is confident of achieving it in the next few weeks. Balakrishnan's time of 10.44s is an improvement on the recognised national record of 10.50s set by Balakrishnan at the Permit Meet last year.
