INS flays hike in freight rate for magazines

ENS ECONOMIC BUREAU
MUMBAI, May 29: Vijay Darda, the president of the Indian Newspaper Society (INS), has expressed shock at the announcement by railway minister Nitish Kumar during his budget speech today that freight rates for magazines will be increased by 20 per cent.Darda said in a statement that magazines should not be discriminated against and the proposed increase of 20 per cent on parcel rates for magazines is "arbitrary and must be withdrawn".He stated that the newspaper industry is presently passing through difficult times, with declining advertising revenues and sharply rising costs. He also stated that in a democracy "the Fourth Estate must be free from such curbs." Any increase in cost, he said, would be detrimental to all categories of magazines, particularly in the small and medium categories.
