NASHIK, May 29: Dedicating the renovated birthplace of Swatantryaveer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar to the nation at Bhagur village last night, Chief Minister Manohar Joshi said that his Government would make all efforts to conserve the birthplaces of martyrs and turn them into memorials. The dedication ceremony was organised on the occasion of Savarkar's 115th birth anniversary.Speaking at the function, the Chief Minister lauded Savarkar's role in the freedom struggle. Joshi also pointed out that Savarkar's definition of "Hindutva" helped him convince the court of his case when a petition was filed against him for "using religion to get votes". He said that armed with a copy of Hindutva, written by Savarkar, he managed to make his point clear and was acquitted.
It may be recalled that the Government had acquired Savarkar's house in 1990 and declared it a public monument. Later, the house was renovated at a cost of Rs 23 lakh. The State Government is now planning to convert it into a museum, where Savarkar'spossessions will be displayed.
Yesterday's function went on without any glitches, despite the fact that the Maharashtra State Electricity Board had served a notice on the Bhagur Municipal Council, threatening to cut off power supply for the failure on the Council's part to pay the bills. However, the divisional revenue commissioner of Nashik wrote a letter to MSEB officials, urging them not to carry out their threat, and his quick action helped to save the day.
