Budget irks BJP allies

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, May 29: Rumblings of dissent are making their presence felt within the Atal Behari Vajpayee Government, with alliance partners complaining of being cold-shouldered.

Incensed at what it sees as the Centre's indifference towards the deteriorating law and order situation in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress today formally "suspended" its support to the Government. Charging the BJP-led Government of tacitly entering into a deal with the Left Front in West Bengal, she lamented that many elements of the Bengal package promised to her by the ruling combine had been incorporated in the rail budget.

The rail budget, in fact, seems to have added to the woes of the BJP Government. It came in for severe criticism by members of the Biju Janata Dal and even BJP MPs hailing from Gujarat.

Interrupting Railway Minister Nitish Kumar's speech, BJD members rushed angrily towards him, charging him with ignoring the interests of their state. With no assurance forthcoming from the minister, they later staged awalk-out.

Tathaghata Satpathy, party MP from Dhenkanal, later told mediapersons that they had requested the Railway Ministry to start three new projects in their state. "Despite being given a firm assurance, none of these projects find any mention in the rail budget," he said. Angry BJD MPs later held meeting in which they decided to register their protest with the Government. They were awaiting the arrival of party president and Union Steel and Mines Minister Naveen Patnaik to chalk out their future course of action.

It's not just the alliance partners who are upset with the Government for letting them down. The BJP's own MPs from Gujarat are also up in arms, charging the Railways Ministry with ignoring their demands. "We had submitted a list of demands to the Cabinet Minister. None of them have been met," a party MP said.

The state MPs later met Union Textiles Minister Kashiram Rana, who promised to take up the matter with Union Home Minister L K Advani.

Advani represents the state capitalGandhinagar in the Lok Sabha.
