NEW DELHI, May 31: Several employees' associations and unions in telecom department (DoT) have opposed government plans to corporatise the department saying the "untimely move" will not only hit revenue but also developmental activities especially in rural India, but welcomed "structural changes"."We are opposed to corporatisation of DoT but not to the structural changes for improving efficiency in DoT," representatives from nine associations and unions including Indian Telecom Services Association (ITSA), told reporters here today.
ITSA president, A K Sinha and its general secretary N K Chokker, said the change over to corporate structure would invite a burden of Rs 10,000 crore towards corporate tax annually which is three-fourths of the DoT's revenue. They said, at present, 80 per cent of the total revenue was being spent on development activities. In case of privatisation this would take a back-seat, they argued.
