JAIPUR, May 31: The victim of the J C Bose Hostel gangrape in Jaipur has retracted her statement about the second gangrape on May 22, say the police.According to them, the girl said that she had developed a friendship with a doctor living opposite the office of the voluntary organisation where she worked. She had gone to meet him at 4 pm on May 22. The doctor, the police say, has confirmed the incident.
The girl's father was not available for comment as he was away and was likely to return only late at night.
The report of the second gangrape on May 22 had shaken the entire state. The girl, who went missing for over three hours that day, had claimed that she was abducted by three masked men who took her away in a red Maruti van and raped her in the moving vehicle.
A medical examination established sexualintercourse, but the police felt the rest of her story lacked credibility. Investigations could not confirm her story of abduction in a red Maruti van. When a National Women's Commission team led byits chairperson Mohini Giri came to Jaipur and questioned the girl closely, she expressed her wish to modify her statement. She then said that Suresh Yadav, a man known to her for long, had taken her on his motorcycle to his shop in Mansarovar. Three masked men were waiting for her there, she said. One of them took her inside and raped her.
The police say that an inspection of the spot did not corroborate that version either. A cooler repair shop has been operating in place of Suresh Yadav's real estate business office for the past six months.
Meanwhile, under mounting pressure from the media and women's organisations, the State Government decided to hand over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Before the CBI began investigating the case, the police say, the girl came out with a fresh version of the story and retracted the statement that she was raped.
