Dar's kin killed, brother abductedSRINAGAR: Former Union Minister of State for Home Mohammad Maqbool Dar's brother-in-law was killed and elder brother kidnapped by militants in south Kashmir on Sunday. Elsewhere in the state three residents and six militants were among 15 people killed while forces captured eight militants during the past 24 hours.
Heat toll 828
NEW DELHI: The month-long heat wave claimed 100 more lives, 78 in worst-hit Orissa alone, taking the toll to 828 this month. There was no respite with mercury remaining above normal in most parts of the country today. Seventy-eight people died in Orissa, 14 in Uttar Pradesh, four in Bihar, and three in Rajasthan, mostly due to sunstroke, since yesterday. Dholpur in Rajasthan was the hottest place in the country recording 48 degrees Celsius. Since the onset of heat wave, Orissa accounted for 361 deaths followed by Andhra Pradesh (147), Rajasthan (142), Uttar Pradesh (70), Maharashtra (25), Madhya Pradesh (23), Bihar (28), Gujarat(12), West Bengal (10), Punjab (seven), Chandigarh (two), and Tamil Nadu (one).
Medha held
INDORE: Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) leader, Medha Patkar, along with 466 persons including 219 women, was today arrested for violating prohibitory orders imposed at the site of Maheshwar hydel project in Madhya Pradesh's Khargaon district. Prohibitory orders were imposed in the area following "naka bandis" organised by NBA for the last fortnight to stop vehicles carrying material for the work of the project.
Anti-tobacco day
NEW DELHI: The Delhi Medical Association had organised a symbolic rally to highlight the ill effects of consumption of tobacco and to stress the need for "growing up without tobacco" at Rajghat, the samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi as part of "World No Tobacco Day" today.
