Parents protest entrance for medical admissions

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, May 31: Parents of students who appeared for the HSC exams in March 1998 have strongly protested the state government's decision to hold the Common Entrance Examination (CEE) for admission to medical colleges.

At a meeting held today, parents were unanimous that the time given to students to prepare themselves for the exams was inadequate. One parent said: ``We're not against the holding of the entrance exams, but students should be intimated well in advance. The students should be spared this year, and the government should hold the exams next year onwards.''

The government, he said, should have informed students of the entrance exams much before the HSC exams, as students were banking on results of the HSC exams. Another parent said the students are not aware of the nature of questions in the CEE and aren't well-versed with the multiple choice pattern. The CEE, she felt, would benefit the Bachelors of Science students who are also eligible for entrance.

Since the review petition filed by thestate government before the Supreme Court has been adjourned to July, the parents said, it would be too late to wait. They suggested the apex court's vacation bench should be approached and a stay on the CEE obtained. Some parents were also in favour of approaching the state government. One parent termed the government's notification unclear. He pointed out that while Health Minister Dr Daulatrao Aher announced equal emphasis would be given to both HSC and entrance exams for admissions to medical colleges, the notification made no mention about the marks secured by students in HSC examinations.
