D'Silva saves day for Central Bank

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, June 1: Valky D'Silva's equaliser, just after his team Central Bank of India (CBI) conceded a goal in the 35th minute, enabled CBI draw their match against Bank of India (BoI) in a Gulf Lubricants WIFA Super Division League at the Cooperage today.

D'Silva lobbed the ball over BoI's goalkeeper Sanjiv Verma who had advanced. A long shot was taken by medio Stephen Dias. BoI deep defender Evaristo Cardozo mistimed his shot and it found D'Silva, who without wasting time, lobbed the ball in the empty net.

Chandrakant Poojary put BoI ahead in the 35th minute with a neat finish off MK Karmughilan's cross from the right flank. After receiving a long pass from Cardozo, Karmughilan stretched the left defender to make place for his cross into the goalmouth. Onrushing Poojary flicked the ball over the head of advancing CBI custodian Jerome Ghanekar.

BoI could have won the match had reliable defender Cardozo placed his shot in the framework, off a low cross from Karmughilan in the 58th minute.

In the 39thminute, Karmughilan's header off a cross from Poojary saw CBI custodian Ghanekar bring off the best save of the day. He was airborne when punching out BoI new recruit's header.

BoI coach Devdas came out with three substitutions -- Navin Kotian, Ramesh Poojary and Nasir Hussain -- in the second-half to put pressure on the opponents. But it did not make any difference for the CBI defence as defenders Prem Malhotra, Mario Caldeira, Nassir Hussein and Jamil Ansari stood like a rock and did not permit any of the moves from BoI to enter the box area.
