My Den/ Shaina N C
Sujata Assomull
Fashion designer, Shaina N C, spends most of her time in a tiny den two floors above her Kala Ghoda retail outlet, Golden Thimble. "I can do my own thing here," she says. And that is evident. This small room has everything she might need her drawing pad, design pencils, fashion books, magazines, a phone, a fax and a computer. "Downstairs there are too many clients so I cannot really concentrate," says Shaina. Upstairs, cramped though the space may be, Shaina has room to think, work and keep tabs on her accounts. "It is a small but functional place," she says.Time that is invaluable as at the moment, Shaina is busy getting clothes ready for a New York showing. Her new collection is a fusion line involving a lot of silver antique embroidery. Long working hours, frenetic activity and constant fire-fighting dominate her days, so when the pace gets too much, Shaina retreats to her favourite room and resorts to her most-effective therapy. "To pep myself up I play music in background," says Shaina. One of herfavourite artistes: Whitney Houston. We can understand why: Houston's incredible range of voice must inspire Shaina to design an equally incredible range of couture. Copyright © 1998 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
