Sujlana asks Gill to resign

MUMBAI: Former Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) executive council member P S Sujlana today demanded that the IHF president K P S Gill and secretary K Jyotikumaran resign forthwith owning moral responsibility for the team's dismal display in the ongoing World Cup in Utrecht.

Sujlana accused the IHF top brass of keeping the executive body in the dark about the team's preparations for Holland,and demanded that the two IHF bosses quit.

Vengsarkar urges

MUMBAI: Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar has called upon the members of the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) to stop fighting among themselves.In a letter to MCA president and Maharashtra chief minister Manohar Joshi, Vengsarkar has pointed out to the controversy over the installation of the megavision scoreboard at the Wankhede Stadium and asked for the problems to be solved by appointing a three-member committee.

Brojen Das dead

CALCUTTA: Bangladesh's ace long-distance swimmer Brojen Das died earlyin the morning today at a private nursing home in Calcutta. Das, 70, leaves behind his wife, a son and a daughter. He was suffering with cancer for the past few months and was under treatment.

Das, who has crossed the English Channels six times, created the world record for the fastest crossing in 1961. He was the first Asian winner of the Channel Swimming Competition in 1958. Das was awarded the National Award for Sports twice in 1959 and 1977.

Three make mark

NAGERCOIL: Three athletes, Neelam J Singh, Swarjeet Kaur and Satvin Singh crossed the Asian qualifying mark in the first of the three circuit meets, conducted by the Amateur Athletic Federation of India (AAFI) at the Anna Stadium here today.

In the women's discus throw, 27-year-old Neelam Singh hurled the discus to 54.24 metres to better the Asian qualifying mark of 52m. Second placed Surjit Kaur, who hurled the discus to 52.24m, also crossed the qualifying mark. In the men's javelin throw, Satvin Singh hurled the spear to 75.82m.The Asian qualifying distance is 75.68m.
