HOSHIARPUR, June 1: Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had put the nation on warpath by starting the nuclear arms race in the region and his partner Parkash Singh Badal had unleashed a reign of terror in Punjab, said Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, former Chief Minister, Punjab while addressing a press conference here today.Bhattal said that the security environment had been endangered in the nation and there was a law and order problem in the state. She also criticized the state government for blatantly using official machinery for the elections.
All rest houses had been occupied by the ruling leaders and there was no place for any Congress leader, she alleged. Government officials had been put on duty to arrange for their election rallies and ministers announced grants openly in violation of the model code of conduct.
In a hand hitting statement, Bhattal said Chief Election Commissioner M.S. Gill had lowered the dignity of the high office he occupied, by adopting a partisan attitude. She alleged that there was no observer willing to check the violations and complaints to the Chief Election Commissioner by party members were not even considered.
Bhattal said that a "jungle raj" prevailed in the state while condemning the alleged lathi charge on ad-hoc teachers by Akali workers at the Chief Minister's rally in Sham Churasi on Thursday. She said that people who demanded justice were suppressed forcibly and alleged that Congress panches and sarpanches were being politically victimized and forced to support the ruling government in the coming zila parishad and block samiti elections.
Terming it as a constitutional violation, she condemned the dissolution of zila parishads and block samities long before their tenure expired. She disclosed that a meeting of Punjab Pradesh Congress had been fixed up for June 4 to discuss the issue.
Bhattal condemned the withdrawal of security to state Youth Congress President Jaspal Singh Dimpla and alleged that Dimpla was being harassed as he was working for the success of the Congress candidate in Tarn Taran. She also alleged that his vehicles were being challaned unnecessarily.
Bhattal said that crime had increased in the state and development had came to a stand still after the Akali dal-BJP government had come to power. She also said that unrest prevailed in all section of the society. She feared rigging in Tarn Taran and Sham Churasi polls and said that the Congress workers had been alerted.
Later, she addressed a rally at village Sahri in favour of party candidate Santosh Chowdhary. She was accompanied by former minister Dr Kewal Krishan and Ramesh Dogra.
