Sunderam named manager

MUMBAI: Former Delhi Ranji opener and current Uttar Pradesh coach, Venkat Sunderam, has been chosen as the Indian team's manager for the tour to Sri Lanka for the June 19-July 7 tri-Nation Independence Cup limited overs cricket tournament which also features New Zealand.

Announcing this from Baroda, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Jaywant Lele, said that the 14-member National squad, to be selected here on June 5, would have a three-day camp at Chennai from June 13-15 before leaving for the Emerald Isles on June 16.

Arjun second

CALCUTTA: India'S Arjun Singh, who was leading the field on the opening day, played indifferent golf to slip to joint second position after the second round of the Singapore Junior Amateur Open Golf Championship at the Island Country Club Course today.

Singh, who celebrated his birthday yesterday with a par 72, returned a card of six over 78 to jointly take the second position with Pakistan's WaqasAhmed, according to information reaching here.

Chang Hong Wei of Chinese Taipei, who returned a card of one under 71, was leading the field after the second round with a cumulative score of 146.

Kabaddi camp

CHANDIGARH: The All-India Kabaddi Federation has invited 24 players for the national coaching camp in preparation of the Indian team for the Bangkok Asian Games. According to a spokesman of the Sports Authority of India Regional Centre here, the camp will be held at high altitude training centre at Shilaroo from June 18 to July 17.

Double for MP

SOLAN: Madhya Pradesh boys retained the eighth Sub-junior National Baseball championship as they overcame a spirited Delhi challenge in the final here yesterday. The winners eventually prevailed 18-14.

MP girls matched their boys and bagged the title in their section, beating Goa 10-3 in the final. The Little League Boys Trophy went to UP who beat Haryana 9-6.

Jeev earnings

CHANDIGARH: Ace Indian professional golfer ChiranjeevMilkha Singh played 12 under par 276 and finished a creditable joint 22nd in the recently concluded Deutsche Bank-SAP Open TPC of Europe. According to information given by his father legendary `Flying Sikh' Milkha Singh here today, Jeev shared the 22nd spot with Nick Price, Paul Mcginley and Ian Garbutt. Each of them got 11,880 pounds.

Scribe no more

MUMBAI: Veteran scribe and former Press Trust of India (PTI) sports correspondent, Jermano Albuquerque died here last night after a brief illness. He was 77 and is survived by wife, a son and four daughters.Albuquerque was a PTI correspondent for a number of years and covered several international assignments including the three Asian Games in 1974 (Teheran), 1978 (Bangkok), 1982 (New Delhi). The funeral is scheduled to be held at the Haynes Road Cemetry at Mahalaxmi later today.
