Women's hockey team endures airport ordeal
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, June 3: The Indian women's hockey team members had a harrowing time in at the Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris, reeling under the Air France pilots strike, on their return home from the Utrecht World Cup. The entire team, which landed in Paris from Amsterdam to board the Paris-Delhi Air-India flight, suffered an ordeal for two-and-a-half hours as they lugged their baggage to the Air-India counter before they eventually boarded the flight and landed here early today."It was a nightmare and there was total confusion. Even the porters and trolley people went on strike from last night alongwith the Air-France pilots," Indian Women's Hockey Federation secretary, Amrit Bose who arrived with the team members, told PTI. The Indian women showed fighting spirit in running their rivals close, but lost all matches to finish 12th and last in the May 20 to 31 tournament in the Netherlands. Olympian Col Balbir Singh, the chief coach, had to rush to London to see his sister who is seriously ill followingrenal failure and a heart attack, she added. The players later left for their respective towns. Copyright © 1998 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
